World Book Day: A Gentle Guide to Potty Training from Early Years Specialist and Author Emma Grant

World Book Day has always been a lovely moment in the childcare calendar. In our setting, it usually means favourite stories being read again and again, children dressing up as their favourite characters, and a gentle reminder of how powerful books can be in a child’s life.

But this year feels a little more personal.

Today, my new book The Only Potty Training Book Mum Will Ever Need — Told by a Toddler Who’s Learning Too! is officially live on Kindle.

After more than twenty years supporting families as an early years specialist and childminder, potty training is something I’ve helped hundreds of children navigate. Every child approaches it slightly differently, but the same worries come up again and again for parents.

Am I starting too early?
Have we left it too late?
Why has my child suddenly started refusing?
What if we begin and it all goes wrong?

These worries can turn what should be a natural developmental milestone into something that feels stressful or overwhelming.

That is exactly why I wrote this book.

How Do You Know When Your Child Is Ready for Potty Training?

One of the most important ideas behind the book is that potty training doesn’t just happen to a child. It is something they experience.

The main character, Noah, is not one specific child. He is a blend of the many little Noahs and Ellas I have worked with over the years. Through Noah’s toddler voice woven throughout the book, parents can begin to understand what this transition feels like from the child’s perspective.

Because for a toddler, learning to trust their body, leave nappies behind and use the potty is a big step.

Sometimes they feel proud.
Sometimes they feel unsure.
Sometimes they decide “Not today”.

When we understand their experience, our approach becomes calmer and more compassionate.

Potty Training Isn’t a Race

One message I have repeated to parents for years is this:

Potty training isn’t about pressure.
It isn’t about age.

It’s about readiness, confidence and feeling safe.

This book isn’t a rigid three-day method and it doesn’t require families to put life on hold until potty training is “finished”. Instead, it offers a practical, confidence-building roadmap that helps parents recognise genuine readiness, build body awareness, handle accidents calmly and support children who feel anxious or resistant.

Because confidence matters far more than speed.

A Quiet Milestone in My Author Journey

World Book Day also feels meaningful for another reason.

I’ve published books before, but always with a publisher behind me. This time I chose to take the independent route, and it has been an incredibly satisfying experience.

For the first time I was involved in every stage of the process — writing the book, designing the cover, directing the photography and working through the formatting and final upload myself.

Full creative control is both empowering and slightly exposing, but seeing the finished book live on Amazon today feels like a quiet but significant milestone.

I’m also excitedly waiting for the proof paperback to arrive, and if everything looks right the paperback edition should be available very soon too.

Why I Really Wrote This Book

Over the years I have come to realise that potty training itself isn’t usually the problem.

Parental anxiety is.

Parents compare themselves to others, worry about nursery deadlines, and feel pressure from well-meaning advice online or from friends and family. Somewhere along the way, confidence disappears.

I wanted this book to give parents that confidence back.

If you close the book feeling calmer than when you opened it, then it has done its job.

Because potty training isn’t just about saying goodbye to nappies.
It is about independence, trust and pride.

And both parents and children deserve to feel confident during that journey.

On a day that celebrates the magic of books, I feel incredibly grateful to share this one with you.

Happy World Book Day.
