Home schooling (or elective home education) has been on the rise since 2019, and the pandemic played a big part. What began as a temporary necessity turned into a long-term lifestyle choice for many families including the mums I spoke to for this summer’s issue of Mums and Tots magazine.
So, why are more parents choosing this path?
🧠 Personalised Learning & Flexibility
Some children have additional learning needs, anxiety, or sensory sensitivities that make traditional school environments difficult. Others simply thrive with a more flexible routine and learning tailored to their interests and pace.
Joann, a mum of four, explained how home schooling allowed her family to travel, learn through real-life experiences, and escape the pressure of fitting in. Suze, inspired during the pandemic, noticed her children were happier and progressing more at home — and they’ve been home educating ever since.
💗 The Joys: More Time, Deeper Connection
Both mums agree that having more time with their children is one of the biggest gifts. They describe their days as more joyful, laughter-filled, and connected. Lessons are often shaped around what excites their children, whether that’s art, science, or visiting a museum.
😅 The Challenges: Time, Curriculum & Self-Doubt
It’s not without its hurdles. Finding the right curriculum, teaching subjects like maths (a common struggle!), and juggling the roles of both mum and educator can feel overwhelming at times. But with support, flexibility, and access to resources like tutors or online classes, these challenges can be overcome.
🚫 Myths About Socialisation
One of the biggest misconceptions? That home-schooled kids aren’t social. Both Joann and Suze firmly disagree. Their children are social, confident, and involved in activities from sports to community groups. As Suze puts it, “Our social calendar is busier than ever!”
💬 Their Advice to Other Mums
Both mums had the same message: You don’t have to get it perfect. Just get started. Trust yourself, connect with others on the same path, and remember — you can always adapt.
Is Home Education Right for You?
It might not be for every family, but for some, it’s life-changing. If you're considering it, know that you're not alone — and there’s a whole community of parents ready to support you.
